Work is underway on the "Downtown Plaza" project at the corner of Main and Lombard Streets that will turn the vacant lot into a downtown "centerpiece." The $389,000 project should be completed by sometime in October. "We're looking forward to seeing the area take shape into something beautiful," said Mayor Jody McLeod.
Workmen built a fence around the area this week and began preliminary grading. Pre-construction work was completed a few weeks ago, including removing trees and the granite installed on the site more than a hundred years ago as part of the old Ashley Horne home that once stood there. The granite will be reused in the new project.
Once completed, the Plaza will add beauty to the area and give shoppers a place to meet and relax, the Mayor said. It will also be the new home of the Clayton Farmers Market.
Public parking will be available during construction in the gravel parking lot behind Main Street Commons, a complex that includes Hometown Realty, Element Funding and Main Street Seafood. Parking is also available on Main Street.
